What Actionstep Is

Actionstep, founded in 2004 by Ted Jordan in Auckland, New Zealand (first commercial use 2005), is a cloud practice management platform for midsize firms operating across the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, with its US office in Denver. It is privately held with growth-equity backing from Serent Capital since September 2020, and has expanded by acquisition: LawMaster (2022), FilePro (announced September 1, 2023) and the Soluno legal-accounting product (September 25, 2023, acquired from AffiniPay), and Traced Technologies (January 2026). After the FilePro deal it cited a combined subscriber base near 28,000 (company figure, 2023).

The platform's center of gravity is configurable workflow automation per matter type, surrounded by matter management, document automation (the Builder add-on), client intake (the Capture add-on), time recording, billing, a client portal, and reporting. In August 2024 it announced a North American legal accounting suite built on Soluno technology (customer rollout from October 2024) — general ledger, accounts payable, trust accounting, and financial reporting — sold as a second product alongside practice management.

Its AI direction arrived with the Traced acquisition: Trace, an AI passive time-capture module announced January 29, 2026, alongside vendor-described AI-assisted intake and filing. Pricing is quote-based — the live pricing page publishes no figures; both products are priced per user with separate implementation fees.

Who It’s Built For

Midsize firms, general practice — explicitly not a PI specialist. It maintains a personal injury practice-area page with PI document templates and workflow-triggered client updates, but PI is one of fourteen-plus supported areas; its Software Advice profile lists bankruptcy, business, family, immigration, and real estate as primary segments. NZ/AU origins with a growing US footprint since the Serent investment.

Where It Fits in a Firm’s Stack

Actionstep competes for the midsize-firm slot where Filevine, Litify, and CARET Legal also pitch — differentiating on per-matter-type workflow configurability and, in North America, an owned accounting suite that removes the QuickBooks seam. Its integration list includes Smith.ai, connecting it to the reception layer profiled elsewhere in this directory.

For plaintiff firms specifically, the PI template set covers complaints, incident reports, and record requests, but medical-records, lien, and settlement tooling of the PI-native tier is not part of the platform — the evaluation is general-platform configurability versus specialist depth.

Questions Firms Ask

Is Actionstep built for personal injury firms?

No — it is a general midsize-firm platform with a configurable PI workflow template set, not a PI-specific system.

Does it include full accounting or need QuickBooks?

In North America it offers its own legal accounting suite, built on the acquired Soluno technology; a Xero integration is also available.

Is pricing published?

No — per-user pricing plus implementation fees, by quote only.

Is it a US company?

It was founded and is headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand (2004), with a Denver US office and San Francisco/Austin-based PE backing since 2020.
