Resenteeism and the Case for Truly Caring About Your People

We have a new phenomenon in the workforce, “Resenteeism” – or do we? Is it so new? The article below says it occurs when employees, “…hate [their] job enough to do more than 'quiet quit' but are too anxious about the economy to leave.” I remember business owner once sharing their concern about employees leaving. My advice to the owner was to “just love your employees.” I do not know that I was actually “eye-rolled,” but it would be fair to characterize the reception as being poorly received. I would argue that “loving” or “caring” for people is a powerful and effective blend of servant and authentic leadership. When I gave that advice, what immediately came to mind was not a precept of John Maxwell or Simon Sinek (who are great, btw), but rather Sun Tzu: “Carefully study the well-being of your men, and do not overtax them…” “Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.” Care about people – really, truly. Talk with them about their kids, pets, sports…whatever. Time, even if only a minute or two, can make a world of difference. A quote attributed to Maya Angelou nails it, “…people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” An authentic work culture that genuinely cares for people goes a long, long way in employee retention and development. leadership development culture employeeretention
